Elevated IOP is the only treatable risk factor for patients with open-angle glaucoma.
Elevated IOP may cause increased pressure on the optic disc. The optic nerve takes images as seen by the eyes and sends them to the brain. The optic nerve leaves the eyes through the optic disc. Increased pressure may cause the optic disc to become larger and thinner and cause damage to retinal ganglion cells, resulting in gradual visual field loss.
Lowering IOP and the pressure on the optic disc reduces the risk of disease progression and vision loss. Clinical studies funded by the National Eye Institute have proven that lowering IOP reduces the risk for vision loss in patients with glaucoma.
